Teacher shortage continues, over 40,000 needed
View(s):The education sector is still short of over 40,000 teachers, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament this week.
Responding to a question in Parliament she said that of these 40,621 vacancies exist in provincial schools while 2,652 vacancies are in national schools.
The total number of vacancies is 43,273. The ministry has made repeated attempts to fill the vacancies in the sector over the past three years, but due to a string of cases filed by various groups the this has been held up.
Former Education Minister Susil Premajayantha made several attempts last year to reach an amicable settlement with the parties concerned and fill the vacancies, but the attempts were not successful.
Meanwhile, several schools have been affected due to the lack of teachers, forcing students to attend private tuition classes.
Teacher unions have claimed that the lack of teachers was one of the reasons for the drop in school attendance.
They said that earlier the lack of attendance was in A/L classes but now has spread to O/L classes.
They said that they are unable to take action against the students and enforce discipline on attendance.
