The Power of Dissemination, Networking, and Collaboration (DNC): A New Research Paradigm for Sri Lanka

View(s):

Researchers and scholars serve as fundamental pillars of the world, driving investigation and exploration. We can explain this using the Dissemination, Networking, and Collaboration(DNC) model. DNC  is a fundamental and most wanted model by any regardless of the country you are living in, Most of the time scholars willing to disseminate their knowledge is different platforms for different segments of people. Anyway in developing countries we need to balance “Scholarly publications” and “ Non-scholarly publications”. Non-scholarly publications are written for a general audience in newspapers, magazines, etc to aware people, inform people, and for many other purposes. I believe in Sri Lanka there should be a debate among Universities and scholarly forums on “ Scholarly publications” and “ Non-scholarly publications”.

There is an inclination that can be seen for scholarly publications for obvious reasons but need to understand the actual needs of society to have a proper balance. Also to be with common people and to understand their sentiments there is a need to explore some areas which is one of the expectations as the outcome of free education as well. The Father of Free Education Dr. C. W. W. Kannangara always believed that the education that is given free from kindergarten to university ultimately addresses social inequality and creates a better future for Sri Lanka. You cannot underestimate that factor, especially in the Sri Lankan context.We can align that with the second component of our model of DNC,  Networking, which can be seen in various discussions of scholarly work at conferences. Researchers are willing to gather in many local and international forums and discuss certain topics. Even for Non-scholarly publications, we can see different forums and discussions in other countries, But in Sri Lanka which is rare. We need to promote that aspect as well. It should be the responsibility of all stakeholders including the government, Professional bodies, universities, and all institutions. The outcome of discussions on such forums can be taken into consideration and may be certainly directly related to policy decisions of the country. Even the same outcome can take as one initiation of our third element of “collaboration”. In collaborations people(or entities) get together to discuss, and contribute their expertise which is finally benefiting the individuals ,institutes and in the broader sense the country as well.

We are currently living in the twenty-first century in which people are always more concerned about ‘individual identity’ than ‘the identity of the world’. This is being observed as “identical” across countries, regions, nations, cultures, ethnic groups as well as religions. The repercussions of this can be seen from the point of view of violence, and conflicts, We already experienced a disaster with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, we have to question whether the researchers are addressing the manifest problem rather than the latent problem which can be considered as important for investigation. The research architecture in the world should be governed by the agenda which always deals with something that should touch the hearts, minds, and souls of people in terms of governance, conscience as well as relationships regarding the well-being of Humans, Animals, and the Earth (HAE).

Concussion

We need to understand the value of the Dissemination, Networking, and Collaboration(DNC)  model in the world of research. Even though a scholar is from a geographically small country, his/her contribution to the field of research is of immense value and demonstrates how large he/she is, in terms of value, that is being added to the current stock of knowledge. Also as discussed earlier, there should be a concern as a developing country on the duty and the responsibility of researcher /scholar by looking at the expectations of a nation. The well-being of Humans, Animals, and the Earth (HAE) is deeply connected to the challenges faced by countries like Sri Lanka and should be a key priority in every citizen’s personal agenda. In Sri Lanka, it is still evident that many prefer to remain in their comfort zones, often resorting to blame rather than seeking solutions. But the time has come for everyone to consider how Sri Lanka can earn a globally recognised identity through an entrepreneurial mindset. I believe this is one way we can truly honour Dr. C.W.W. Kannangara for his contributions.
