View(s):By Ranjith Padmasiri
The Supreme Court this week ordered the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to pay annual interest of 11.67% on security deposits collected from consumers when providing electricity connections.
The Supreme Court gave the order after considering a fundamental rights petition filed in this regard. The three-Judge bench comprising Justices S. Thurairaja, Sobhitha Rajakaruna and Menaka Wijesundera also ordered that both domestic and other electricity consumers receive the annual interest rate as determined by the Central Bank.
The fundamental rights petition had been filed by the Electricity and Renewable Energy Consumers’ Association and its officials.
Attorney-at-Law Dr. Ravindranath Dabare appeared for the petitioners. State Counsel Sureka Ahamed appeared for the CEB and the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka.
