Poor digital literacy among fishermen, delays the process of switching from current logbook entries to a new digital catch certification system in fishing vessels as set out in the European Union (EU) recommendations, a senior official from the Fisheries Ministry said.

“We have already commenced the process but we noticed that poor digital literacy among fisherfolk is a challenge ahead of us. We are trying to resolve this through several initiatives launched by the Ministry,” Fisheries Ministry secretary Sampath Manthrinayake told the Sunday Times.

A delegation from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) visited the country on February 13 to review the country’s fisheries management practices and its compliance with the EU’s roadmap on sustainable fisheries governance.

Issue of bottom trawling taken up with EU officials

The discussions focused on the country’s progress in addressing Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing practices and enhancing regulatory compliance within the fisheries sector as the EU remains largest importer of Sri Lankan seafood exports.

Earlier, the EU provided a roadmap to the Fisheries Ministry, outlining a series of measures to curb IUU fishing as part of lifting the ban on Sri Lankan seafood exports that was imposed in 2015.

Mr. Manthrinayake said they also brought to the attention of EU officials about the ongoing illegal bottom trawling by Indian fishermen in the Northern sea and urged them to take action as well.
