Talks on whether the Independent Prosecutor’s Office should be under the Attorney General
View(s):By Ranjith Padmasiri
Discussions are underway within government circles on whether the proposed Independent Prosecutor’s Office (IPO) will remain separate from the Attorney General’s Department or operate under the AG, the Sunday Times learns.
This is in the backdrop of the Justice Ministry taking steps to draft a Cabinet paper on the establishment of an IPO.
A discussion on the matter took place earlier this week at the Justice Ministry and was presided over by Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara. The Sunday Times understands that Supreme Court Justice Yasantha Kodagoda, who attended the discussion as the representative of Chief Justice Murdu Fernando, presented an eight-page report to those present.
Work on establishing the IPO will commence after Cabinet approves the proposal.
Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe, Head of the AG’s Department’s Criminal Division Senior Additional Solicitor General Rohantha Abeysuriya, Bar Association of Sri Lanka representative Anura Meddegoda and Justice Ministry Secretary Ayesha Jinasena were also present at the discussion.
