The National Police Commission (NPC) held a meeting with senior police officers attached to the Tourist Police this week to discuss complaints regarding the threats to three-wheeler drivers operating through hailing apps in tourist hot spots across the country.

The meeting was called after the NPC received complaints from the public as well as hoteliers and those operating metered three wheelers that they are facing threats from members of the ‘three-wheeler mafia’ operating in tourist hotspots.

The complaints have come from areas such as Galle, Dambulla, Sigiriya and other areas which are popular tourist sites.

“We held a cordial meeting with the officers of the Tourist Police. They made a presentation and gave us an update on the measures they have taken to stop the menace of these groups that use threats and intimidation against those who transport tourists to such areas,” an NPC source said.

He said the NPC informed the Tourists Police officers that such tactics would affect the tourist industry if left unchecked. “The Police have acted in many instances but whenever there is no active police presence, these groups start intimidating taxi /three wheelers drivers and even those who use such services,” the source said.

The NPC requested the Police to expedite measures to stop such incidents from taking place.
