Water Board’s call for conserving water comes alongside some showers

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has called consumers to conserve water as the ongoing dry weather conditions will have an impact on the water supplies.

The dry weather conditions have affected the water levels of the Kelani River with the Castlereigh reservoir dropping to 8.4 per cent of the storage capacity.

However, the Maussakele capacity was still around 65 per cent.

The NWSDB said that the daily water supply will be disrupted for an extended period due to ongoing dry weather conditions.

The board said that the consumption of water too has been high in the past few weeks due to the heat and therefore consumers need to conserve water.

The Board said that in order to assist residents in higher-altitude areas, arrangements have been made to deliver water via bowsers.

A spokesman for the NWSDB said that they have called consumers to limit the usage of water for non-essential work including washing vehicles and gardening activities.

The Board was continuing to maintain the same production capacity despite the water levels dropping.

The warning from the Water Board came as showers were experienced in some of the areas across the country.

The Meteorology Department said that showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Eastern, Southern and Uva provinces and in Matale, Nuwara-Eliya and Polonnaruwa districts over the weekend.

Several spells of showers will occur in the Northern province and in the Anuradhapura district. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere during the afternoon or night, the Department added.

Heavy showers above 75 mm can be expected at some places in Uva province and in Batticaloa, Ampara, Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Hambantota and Polonnaruwa districts, the Department added.

Meanwhile the capacity in reservoirs used for power generation was above the average of 50 per cent of the capacity.
