Nine cyclists, including 61-year-old Athula Wasantha Kumara and his son Sahan Chamidu, completed a 1,558km journey around Sri Lanka in nine days. The team, known as the Aluthgama Bicycle Clan, started their ride on February 14 from Kaluwamodara, Aluthgama. Their route covered major cities, including Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Nilaveli, Batticaloa, and Kataragama, before returning to Aluthgama. Riding an average of 170km per day, they cycled for 77 hours in total.

The Clan in the North

The group covered long distances and faced challenging conditions, but completed the journey without major difficulties. Their oldest rider, Athula Wasantha, 61, credited his experience cycling to Adam’s Peak for helping him endure the trip. This was the first time a father-son duo, along with seven others, completed such a journey on regular bicycles in Sri Lanka. All nine participants took leave from work to join the ride, which was driven by passion and personal challenge rather than competition.

The clan of nine cyclists included the leader Athula Wasantha Kumara (61), his son Sahan Chamindu (25), Roshan Sanjeewa (37), Kapila Niroshan (41), Gayan Chinthaka (39), Priyal Manjula (44), Wasantha Chandrakumara (50), K. Keerthi (60) and P. Deva (53).
