Sri Lanka’s government is to pave the way for local manufacturers to develop biometric hardware in the digitalisation of its economy.

Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne in an interview with The Sunday Times Business said that digital ID island-wide will see a big demand for biometric hardware that local manufacturers can exploit.

“The Indian government grant to Sri Lanka will be utilised to establish the digital ID verification solutions. The Department of Registrar of Persons has launched the e-NIC project which is a part of the total Digital ID project. For both these we need biometric data capturing,” he explained, noting that the whole digital ID ecosystem will be around these two solutions.

In this backdrop, gradually there will be an opportunity for local manufacturers to develop such biometric hardware, Mr. Weeraratna said.

The Department of Registration of Persons (DRP) has procured 700,000 polycarbonate cards for its Electronic National Identity Card (e-NIC) project, set to be implemented by year-end, M.S.P. Suriyapperuma, Director General DRP told with The Sunday Times Business on Wednesday.

The cards, procured from Finnish firm Thales, will include biometric features such as fingerprint, iris, and face recognition for enhanced security and efficiency in identification confirmation. Sri Lankan banks are already accessing their repository for client details verification, she said.

The plan is to integrate the Sri Lanka Unique Digital ID project with the e-NIC, assigning unique ID numbers, centralising various types of IDs, and capturing data like birth certificates and tax identification. Digitisation is crucial for data-driven policy initiatives to drive the right outcomes.
