Tourism in Sri Lanka is seen prospering with the rise in and interest from Indian visitors who are enthralled by what the island nation has to offer in one of the most compact destinations in Asia, a top Indian official.

Additionally a new casino set to open in mid-2025 in Colombo would also attract Indian high rollers.

“Sri Lanka is a top choice for Indian travellers due to its proximity, cultural ties, and diverse attractions,” Rajiv Mehra, President of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) told The Sunday Times Business an email response, adding that with a short flight and easy visa access, it’s a convenient international getaway to a country that offers a blend of heritage, beaches, wildlife, and adventure, catering to varied traveller interests.

India is Sri Lanka’s biggest source market accounting for 416,974 visitors out of a total of two million arrivals in 2024 and is more than double of second placed Russia which accounted for 201,920 guests.

Macau-based Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd is opening a casino in June-July at the mega Cinnamon Life integrated project in Colombo which opened in October 2024.

The IATO chief said India has a strong market for gaming tourism, with limited domestic options beyond Goa and Sikkim and Sri Lanka, with its proximity and luxury offerings, presents a compelling alternative.
