The University of Colombo has been named as the Lankan state university that has made the greatest number of contributions by the National Innovation Agency, and was awarded the National Innovation Report, Colombo University Vice Chancellor Prof Hettige Don Karunaratne said.

“The award of the National Innovation Report comes in the background of the University of Colombo producing the highest number of patents and two international patents from the period between 2022 to 2024.”

Prof Karunaratne also highlighted that a Netherlands-based research publisher known as Elsevier Research Intelligence has done a study on the 5 best universities in Sri Lanka based on their research outcomes from 2019-2023.

According to the study, the University of Colombo produced 3,145 scholarly research articles that were published in international journals and 13.2% of them were published in the top 10 percent journals in the world of their particular field. The study concluded that the University of Colombo had the highest amount of research being conducted amongst the Lankan state universities.

Regarding the patents that were received, Prof Karunaratne revealed that they were in the medicine production sector with the assistance of the company Fadina where a polyherbal mixture was produced as a wound healer. The university has obtained patent money from these products, which in 2024 amounted to Rs 725,153.

The Vice Chancellor said it was the professors who helped design the patented medicine. The professors included Prof Sameera N Samaraweera, Prof Prithee Udugame, Prof Kamal Perera, Prof Nimal Pooneyina among others.

Prof Karunaratne added that research and innovation have been one of the main foundations of the University of Colombo.

He said the university was trying to focus on obtaining more impactful international research projects with the collaboration of foreign universities and multinational organisations in Sri Lanka. These multinational organisations included the UNDP, UNFPA, WHO and World Bank.

He said the university is pursuing university private-public partnerships that promote research collaboration in digitalisation, entrepreneurship and sustainable development, together with climate change, environmental degradation, business and economic sustainability as well social inclusivity.
