‘Mickey 17’ Mission to colonise Niflheim

The sci-fi dark comedy Mickey 17 made based on the 2022 novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton is now being screened in theatres in Colombo and outstation.

Directed by Bong Joon-ho, the film stars Robert Pattinson in the main role, together with Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.

A disposable employee is sent on a human expedition to colonise the ice world Niflheim. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact.

Mickey Barnes and his friend Timo are financially destitute after a failed business venture, and on the run from a loan shark. Unable to pay their debts, the pair sign up as crew for a space ship that leaves Earth to colonise the planet Nilfheim — Timo as a pilot and Mickey as an “Expendable”. As an Expendable, Mickey is treated as disposable and given lethal assignments, since every time he dies, he is “reprinted” using cloning technology that has been banned on Earth. During the voyage, Mickey develops a romantic relationship with Nasha Barridge, a security agent.

Upon landing on the snow planet Nilfheim, native lifeforms dubbed “creepers” prevent full colonisation. Mickey 17, the seventeenth iteration of Mickey, tries to capture a creeper for analysis but falls into a fissure in the ice. Timo sees Mickey 17 being swarmed by creepers before leaving, and reports him dead. However, the creepers collectively push Mickey 17 out of the fissure, enabling him to return to the ship.

Premiered at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival on February 15, Mickey 17 is released by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The movie is now being screened at Liberty by Scope Kollupitiya, Colombo City Centre, SCOPE Cinema – Havelock City Mall, PVR Cinemas, Milano Diamond, Majestic Colombo, Regal Katubedda- Moratuwa, Regal Gampaha, Regal Bandarawela and Ram Cinema. (SF)
