In a move to provide clean drinking water for residents and visitors in Nuwara Eliya, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has provided the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council a grant of USD 822,100 (LKR 246 million) through UN-Habitat.
The initiative will involve upgrading the community sewerage system in Srinagar settlement; establishing a water recycling facility at Lake Gregory and improving and expanding the water purification plant on Haddon Hill.
The urgent need to provide clean drinking water to visitors is also being included as Nuwara Eliya is a popular travel destination.
Nuwara Eliya Municipal Commissioner K.M.H.W. Bandara addressing the event to accept the donation said it was vital to improve the water facilities as many tourists both local and foreign visit the city.
He said the water recycling facility at Lake Gregory was also important to the farming community in the area while upgrading the community sewerage system in Srinagar settlement was equally important.
Deputy Project Manager of UN-Habitat, Sri Lanka S.L. Anwer who signed the agreement said they hope to complete the projects by August this year.
