Sehara Anuhansi, the 20-year-old from Sri Devananda College, Ambalangoda, surged ahead in the 2 Mile Open Women’s Championship, clinching the gold with a timing of 47:38.83 on Day 1 of the 86th Mount Lavinia Sea Swim Championship yesterday.

Despite a fierce challenge from 16-year-old Ginuki Tharulya de Silva of Leeds Aquatic Club, Panadura, who finished second at 48:17.51, Anuhansi’s determination helped her claim the title. Last year’s winner, 22-year-old Anjalie Agalawatte of the Sri Lanka Navy, settled for third clocking 50:02.49.

In the Under-15 Boys Championship, the race was a nail-biter from start to finish. Dulaksha Ganidu, 14, of Lyceum International School, outpaced his competitors with a timing of 45:22.84, edging out Mark de Zylva of St. Joseph’s College (45:31.88), who earned the silver, and his schoolmate, 13-year-old Sakindu Pigera (45:43.32), who took the bronze. Pigera, trained at Rainbow Aquatics, gave a strong fight but couldn’t quite catch up the leader.

In the Under-15 Girls Championship, Rushalee Dissanayake of Rainbow Aquatics made a splash, finishing with a commanding lead. Dissanayake, from Musaeus College, posted a timing of 47:43.13 to secure the gold. Lyceum International’s A.N. Sathsarani bagged the silver with a timing of 50:16.53, while Keyara Ranepura of Musaeus College earned the bronze, after finishing at 51:48.73. Remarkably, all three podium finishers in the girls’ event are trained at Rainbow Aquatics. The most anticipated Men’s Open 2km Sea Swim will take place today at Mt. Lavinia, followed by the awards ceremony.
