Sri Lanka’s EWIS Colombo Ltd, the country’s first and only local computer manufacturer mission to win the African region and set Sri Lanka’s footprint there, exported its first consignment of locally built laptops to Zimbabwe on Wednesday from its manufacturing plant in Sooriyawewa.

Sanjeewa Wickramanayake, Chairman of EWIS Colombo Ltd told the Business Times that inquiries from Zambia, Kenya, South Africa, and China are in progress for EWIS to join hands and expand businesses. Expanding further, he said out of this the African countries are discussing with EWIS for importing computers. “There is a company in Kenya eyeing feature phone manufacturing. It is still under negotiation,” Mr. Wickramanayake noted adding that this company is also pushing for EWIS to set up a factory there.

EWIS currently produces a feature phone with the brand name Octa. EWIS’s product line starts with feature phones, tablets, laptops, all-in-one computers, televisions, and Smartboards. EWIS Colombo Ltd., with over 11 years of manufacturing and assembly expertise, successfully delivered world-class technology solutions to Sri Lanka’s ICT sector, showcasing its dedication to excellence.

EWIS had managed to make all these connections at the Tech Africa exhibition, where inquiries kept rolling in, Mr. Wickramanayake added. He also said that some Chinese firms are discussing with him using the EWIS facility to build electronics for Africa and a Zimbabwe company is eyeing manufacturing televisions.

Calling for policy changes to boost the industry, he noted that it is important for Sri Lanka to set up free trade agreements (FTA) with countries in Africa to further enhance the industry and exports. “We need an FTA to become an electronics hub. We do not have tax rebates on some parts that we bring to assemble our products here.” He also added that the current global trade can position Sri Lanka in a better field for competition with FTAs. Mr. Wickramanayake added that EWIS has plans to bring in US$1 million in the next three months in Sri Lanka.

EWIS Colombo Ltd (ECL), a subsidiary of the EWIS Group, is the first original device manufacturer in Sri Lanka, producing nearly 250,000 desktop computers and over 200,000 laptop computers annually.
