Port yard space ready in two years
Construction of required yard space to reduce congestion at the Colombo Port is likely to take place at least two years to complete.
Deputy Ports and Shipping Minister Janatha Kodituwakku told The Sunday Times Business that work on the proposed Veyangoda and Bloemendhal facilities to provide increased yard space is likely to take about two years to become operational.
It is the import and export traffic that is not clearing properly causing a block on the roads inside the port which results in congestion, the deputy minister said.
This dry port will help to ease the congestion as continued traffic caused within the port has led to delays and resulting in ships bypassing Colombo Port.
Currently all yards are operating at full capacity, Mr. Kodituwakku said. In the meantime, the port will have to use other private inspection yards in order to ease the congestion.
This Inland Container Depot (ICT) site at Veyangoda is located in the Gampaha district and lies on the Katunayaka – Nittambuwa road and could be approached from Colombo via the A3, a distance of 50 km from the Colombo Port or via the A1, a distance of 40 km from the port. A rail link has been proposed to be established for this site which already had such a link in the past.
