Central Province leads in teacher vacancies

The Central Province has been identified as the province with the highest teacher shortage for provincial schools, followed by the Eastern and Sabaragamuwa Provinces.

According to statistics provided by Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya, in the Central Province, the Kandy District has the highest shortage of teachers amounting to 3,718, followed by Nuwara Eliya with a shortage of 2,676, and Matale with 1,635.

The total vacancies amount to 8,029. In addition, national schools in the province have a shortage of 351 teachers.

Significantly, one-fifth of the country’s shortage of teachers in provincial schools is from the Central Province.

There are a total 40,621 teacher vacancies in provincial schools.

The second highest shortage is in the Eastern Province with 6,364 vacancies followed by 6,061 in the Sabaragamuwa Province.

Ampara has a shortage of 2,405 teachers, followed by 2,013 in Trincomalee and 1,946 in Batticaloa.

The Ratnapura district is short of 3,464 teachers while Kegalle has a shortage of 2,597 teachers.

The Western Province has a shortage of 4,295 teachers with 1,872 needed for Gampaha, 1,321 for Colombo and 1,102 for Kalutara. There’s an additional shortage of 883 teachers in national schools in the province.

The breakdown of the shortage of teachers for provincial schools in the other provinces are as follows: North Western – 3,828, Northern – 3,498, Uva – 3,440, North Central Province 2,574 and Southern 2,532.

The island-wide shortage of teachers in national schools is 2,652.
