Education Council pending Cabinet approval
View(s):A proposal for establishing an Education Council which will serve as the pivotal body in making important decisions in the sector will be presented to the Cabinet this week, Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne said.
He said the council, which will function within the ministry as an independent body, will be akin to the Medical Council or such bodies in other sectors.
The five education sector institutes will be brought under this council. These include the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service, Sri Lanka Teacher Educators Service, Sri Lanka Teacher Service, Sri Lanka Principal Service and the Sri Lanka Teachers Advisers Service.
The council will address issues such as salary related matters, promotions, transfer etc so that the system can be streamlined and run efficiently, the deputy minister said.
It will also register all private and international schools, while teachers too will be registered so as to maintain high standards, he said.
The council will also frame future education policies.
A new code of conduct for teachers and educators too will be put in place so as to ensure that the profession maintains a high standard of integrity, he said.
The council will be a 10 member body with experts in the field of education, drawn from both the state and private sector.
It will be set up once Cabinet approves the proposals. The government hopes to resolve many of the issues affecting the sector through this new body, Mr Seneviratne said. (DW)
