The Fraud Investigation Bureau (FIB) informed the Mt. Lavinia Magistrate’s Court that a statement had been recorded from Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe regarding investigations into the alleged use of a forged deed to lease a plot of land with a two-storey building in Dehiwala.

The court also was informed that they had sought advice from the Attorney General’s Department on whether a criminal offence had been committed, though the magistrate had ordered to carry out a full investigation, arrest the suspects, and produce them in courts.

Maithri Gunaratne, PC, appearing with Kisal Senanayake for the aggrieved party, told the court that despite a previous court order to arrest the suspects, the FIB had sought the AG’s advice to complicate the investigations.

Mr. Gunaratne said that going by the B report submitted by the police earlier, there was a criminal offence committed and said that accordingly the suspects could be arrested.

Magistrate A.D. Chathurika granted permission to submit written submissions about the position of the aggrieved party and fixed the next hearing for March 21.

The incident involves the leasing of a two-storey building in Dehiwala belonging to the trade union, National Workers Institute.

Earlier, the FIB had summoned Deputy Labour Minister and Ceylon Teachers Service Union General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe and Ceylon Electricity Board Workers’ Union General Secretary Ranjan Jayalal to provide statements, as the deed lists them as having leased the property for Rs. 3.6 million.
