Villages in Ampara district including Gonagala, Mayadunna, Senagama, Bandaraduwa, Galapitagala, Sinnawatta, Suhadhagama and Weeragoda settlements have been facing repeated threats from elephants recently, both in the daytime and at night.

Farmers are forced to spend sleepless nights to protect their farmland and homes.

At least three houses were destroyed and several farmlands damaged this week.

A villager, Ajantha Kalupahana said last Monday an elephant had turned up at his house around 11 p.m and was pulling at bags of paddy bags after breaking a portion of the wall.

He said a neighbour started a tractor, which scared the elephant away who eventually left with a bag of paddy.

“We try hard to protect the farmlands and our homes but we need a permanent solution,” he said.

G.V.R. Bandara from Gonagala said over 30 coconut trees were destroyed in the past few days and authorities have failed to give a solution to the issue.

Manjula Pannilage, a Deputy Range officer said they have not received any clear instructions to drive the elephants away.
