Nuwara Eliya all set for a blooming April
View(s):Weeks ahead of the seasonal celebrations in Nuwara Eliya next month, preparations are underway to welcome visitors.
Employees of the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council have been preparing flower beds from January to so that they blossom in time for the festival when visitors from all parts of the country flock to the city.
The area around Gregory’s Lake in the heart of the city which will be the centre of attraction has been prepared, and a variety of flowering plants have been planted.
Already dahlia, cannas,
roses, gerberas and chrysanthemums have been planted and will be in bloom when the spring festival opens.
Premalatha Podimenike, one of the employees, said that they take care of the plants throughout the day, despite the changing weather conditions, with heavy rains and dry weather conditions alternating.
“It is something we look forward to- seeing the plants we take care of like children flowering,” she said.
She said despite the difficulties it is a job which brings some satisfaction at the end.
However, she said it was sad to see that some visitors pluck flowers preventing others enjoying the beautiful scenery. Their appeal to visitors is to witness the beauty without destroying it.
The garden-keeper Shankar Ravi Kumar said that the area around the lake is about 30 to 35 acres and usually they have several designs according to which they prepare the ground and plant flowers.
He said that they have a staff of about 18 workers who work with great dedication to beautify the place.
“We appeal to the public to help to protect the environment”, he said.
While throughout the year the area is kept spruce, special efforts are taken in April.
He said visitors can avail of a nursery from which seeds could be purchased without causing damage to plants.
