One of the most challenging issues facing female scientists is the double burden of unpaid labour, which requires support and remedial measures, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said.
Speaking at the “Women Scientists’ Forum 2025,” organised by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) in Colombo, she pledged to increase the number of women in senior leadership roles across all sectors, including science.
The forum, part of the NSF’s Women in Engineering, Science, and Technology (WEST) Programme, featured 290 women scientists and engineers from the state and non-state sector.
Participants actively engaged in discussions using the “Menti-meter” web application, responding to seven questions on women’s career participation in science.
Science and Technology Minister Dr.Chrishantha Abeysena and senior officials, including Ministry secretary Mohamed Navavi, were also present.
The event was organised by NSF Chairman Prof. Saman Seneweera, and NSF Director General Dr. Sepalika Sudasinghe.
