Road deaths continue to pile up
View(s):A spate of road traffic accidents were reported this week, adding to the number of deaths.
One was a fatal accident at Madampe, Galahitiyawa where a three-wheeler travelling from Chilaw to Colombo crashed into a bus on Monday. The three-wheeler was carrying nine including two women, two men, two boys and two girls. They had been returning from a trip to Thalawila church feast. Three including a one year old, her mother and another woman were killed.
The police said that they arrested the driver and according to medical reports the bus driver was under the influence of ice and cannabis. The three-wheel driver, too, was under the influence of cannabis.

At Ambepussa area on Sunday a bus had collided with a three wheeler. The three- wheel driver and a passenger of the bus were killed. The dead were identified as residents of the Deltota area aged 29 and 47 years.
The two other passengers travelling in the three-wheeler were admitted to Warakapola hospital and one of them was sent to Colombo National Hospital. The bus driver was arrested by police.
In a separate incident, a driver of a car travelling along the Naula-Elahera Road had lost control of the vehicle at Alikanda Monday night. The car had veered off the road and crashed into a sign post before falling into the nearby Yodha Ela. The driver of the car and a female passenger died from serious injuries. Another woman who was injured was admitted to the Bakamoona Hospital before being transferred to the Dambulla Hospital.
In another accident at Angunakolapelessa along the Bakamoona-Dambulla Road, a jeep had crashed into a Kumbuk tree Monday evening. The driver had lost control of the vehicle. The driver and a passenger in the front seat suffered serious injuries and died at the Dambulla Hospital. The dead were identified as two males aged 71 and 74 years old, resident in Bakamoona and Avissawella.
On Tuesday morning, a husband and wife were killed when a small lorry collided with a large lorry at Naula-Bakamoona Road. The small lorry had rammed the back of the other vehicle.
Five people in the small lorry — the driver, a small child, two other males and a female — were taken to Bakamoona Hospital with severe injuries. Later, a male, 47, and female, 41, identified as husband and wife died. They were residents of Hanguranketha.
The police said that use of illegal substances, drunk driving, reckless driving as well as driving without rest were the common reason for accidents.
They have noted that bus and lorry drivers are driving under the influence of drugs.
