The Ministry of Higher Education has begun to address shortcomings in state universities after having met with representatives of students this week.

Deputy Minister of High Education Madura Seneviratne said that during the past week, education officials consulted with students to learn their problem and provided solutions.

For the students of the Sabaragamuwa University, the main issues were the lack of hostel facilities. As a temporary measure, they were given permission to use an unused building in the university as a hostel. “We will be building new hostels but for now they can use these buildings,” Mr Seneviratne said.

In the Colombo University, the main problem was a land issue. A nursing faculty had been started at the university but the land on which the buildings are located belongs to the Health Ministry. Mr Seneviratne said they would talk to health authorities and request the land be given to the university.

In Kilinochchi, Vavuniya and Trincomalee universities, the main issue was the lack of water. The deputy minister said he had contacted the Sri Lanka Navy and they will assist to set up ROs (reverse osmosis water purification process) for the universities.

Meanwhile in the Budget 2025, money has been allocated for several important development projects in the universities as well as welfare measures for students.

These include construction of technology faculties at Kelaniya, Rajarata, Sabaragamuwa universities, construction of a faculty of engineering at the Sri Jayewardenepura University and the construction of a building complex for the Department of Anatomy, Psychology and Biochemistry at the University of Moratuwa.

There will also be the Wayamba University Township Development Project and improvement of infrastructure facilities of medical faculties and professorial units. These include a faculty of medicine at Sabaragamuwa, building complex for faculty of healthcare science at the Eastern University, 17 storied building of medical faculty in Colombo, professorial unit at Karapitiya Hospital and a 12 storied building for faculty of medicine at Ruhuna.

The other projects in the pipeline for this year are establishment of a centre for naval studies and shipping at the Ruhunu University, new buildings for the Swami Vivekananda Aesthetic Institute in Batticaloa and capacity improvement for the dry zone agriculture at the Jaffna University. (DW)
