At the university, during their period of study, we analyse their real-world issues through academic perspectives, applying theories and conducting research to find practical solutions. A PhD and a DBA have more similarities than differences, however, a PhD programme aims at generating fresh theories, while a DBA programme aims at utilising theoretical knowledge to address the practise – related issues of organization whilst contributing new knowledge for strategic implications.
The Excellence Outset of DBA of University of Kelaniya
This degree programme was launched in 2016 under the leadership of Professor D. M. Serasinghe, who was the Dean of the Faculty and later served as the Vice-Chancellor at the university. His thought of introducing a DBA was led by different scholars representing both local and international universities. Finally, the DBA of the University of Kelaniya was launched in the year 2016 in line with the formalities and approvals of the University Grant Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka. This program features local and international teaching and research expertise based on the collaborations initiated at the outset of the program development.
Nature of the programme
The University of Kelaniya proudly stands as the pioneer in introducing the DBA programme to Sri Lanka with nine successful batches enrolled to date. Typically, each batch accommodates approximately 25 students, carefully selected from among the industry’s elite. This esteemed three-year programme is designed to cater to business sector professionals, offering a blend of coursework and research development. The initial year focuses on coursework, re-acquainting candidates with the academic environment and guiding them through the formulation of a comprehensive research proposal. Upon completion of the first year, students are required to submit their research proposals for evaluation. Subsequently, they are assigned two expert supervisors in their respective fields to guide them through the dissertation phase over the next two years. Additionally, students undergo two progress reviews administered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies before undertaking the viva voce examination.
In order to be awarded the DBA, students should publish at least two research articles in indexed journals or other refereed journals based on their research.
Eligibility
Applicants who are seeking to gain admission to the DBA programme are required to meet specific criteria, ensuring a high standard of academic readiness. These requirements include holding either a MPhil Degree from a recognised university or a two-year master’s degree with a significant research component from an accredited institution. Alternatively, candidates can qualify with a one-year master’s degree from a recognised university, provided they possess a minimum of 8 years of executive-level experience. It’s important to highlight that applicants without a research component in their master’s degree must demonstrate their scholarly capabilities by publishing at least one research article in an indexed or refereed journal before the proposal defence. These rigorous standards ensure that candidates entering the DBA programme possess the requisite academic background and research proficiency necessary for success.

A DBA student’s aspirations diverge from those of other postgraduate students. While other postgraduate students anticipate benefits such as career advancement or higher salaries upon completion of their degrees, the learning partners of DBA hold different objectives. Their focus mainly lies on deepening their expertise within their respective domains. They aim to further establish their positions as professional experts in their respective fields. The pursuit of a prestigious image through the attainment of a DBA is their primary goal. Consequently, the programme has been designed to elevate DBA learning partners to foster innovative thinking through a research-based learning experience.
Currently, the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme consists of batches, and we are now inviting applications for our ninth intake. To date, 38 individuals have successfully completed the programme, securing top positions both locally and internationally.
