‘Shakespeare Centre Sri Lanka’ is calling applications from individuals, who like to scientifically study performing arts to follow the higher educational practical courses in the Performing Arts, Shakespeare studies and theatre-in-Education through the courses conducted by the Shakespeare Centre Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare company and Western Australia Academy of Performing Art.

The main subjects in the course includes Acting, Directing, Production, Lighting, Designing, Deco, Make-up, Costume, Management, Fencing, writing and translation and choreography while knowledge related to European theatre traditions and theatre such as Greek, Sanskrit, Japanese and Chinese would also be taught.

‘The Shakespeare Centre Sri Lanka’, led by Obinamuni Gamini De Silva, is a leading organisation in Sri Lanka dedicated to the performing arts, Shakespeare studies, and theatre-in-education, with a history of producing Shakespearean plays and training actors.

The students will also get the opportunity to study  about world famous playwrights namely Shakespeare, Piscator, Ibsen, Brecht and  Stanislavski. Further, the training related to practical subjects such as Theatre Exercises, Voice Training, Singing, Mirror Acting, Yoga, Acting and Walking Method, Emotional and Feeling Therapy with Music, Improvisation and Demonstration are also included in the course.

The main components of Shakespeare Studies are Othello, Macbeth (English, Sinhala  and Tamil), A Midsummer Night’s Dream Julius Caesar (English), Hamlet, The Tempest, Merchant of Venice, The Comedy of Errors, King Richard III, Antony and Cleopatra and  Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar (Sinhala).

“From the beginning (1990), Shakespeare Centre Sri Lanka works as a voluntary educational  institute which produces the rightful citizens to the Sri Lankan society as well as to the field of  art, We try to maintain strict discipline while working together with UN volunteers,” the Centre announced. All the courses conducted are free of charge. The course duration is 4 years and the sessions will be during the weekends in Colombo and starting from 2014 the Centre has so far completed three similar courses, it added.

Prof. Carlo Fonseka, Dr. Edwin Ariyadasa and the Director of Royal Shakespeare Company, Mr. Terry Hans were the pioneers in designing the syllabus and a group of young experts in the field will conduct the lectures.

Those interested in following the courses are requested for a walk-in interview conducted from 10.00  a.m. onwards at Sudarshi Arena of Institute of Sinhala Culture located at Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Torrington, Colombo 07 on Wednesday March 27.
