Remembering the Father of the nation on his 73rd death anniversary

The 73rd death anniversary of the country’s first Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake was commemorated yesterday (March 22) at the Independence Square.
The event organsied by the D.S. Senanayake Memorial Society brought together relatives, guests and former government officials to honour the leader who played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s independence movement.

Floral tributes were laid at the statue of Mr. Senanayake by his grandsons, former ministers Ruwan Wijewardene and Wasantha Senanayake. The Deputy Commissioner of the Colombo Municipal Council A.D.S. Gunawardene garlanded the statue.
The ceremony commenced with a moment of reflection, followed by a rendition of the Mahamanya D.S. Senanayake Mathindu Guna Samaru song by students of D.S. Senanayake College.
The formal proceedings began with a speech by former speaker Karu Jayasuriya. This was followed by a sermon delivered by the Most Venerable Bandarawela Wimaladharma of Kollupitiya Polwatta Sri Dharmakithyarama who reflected on the legacy of the country’s first prime minister.
Retired senior public official Austin Fernando addressing the gathering spoke on the leader’s profound impact on Sri Lanka’s political and
social landscape.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. I.M. Dissanayake, Honorary General Secretary of the commemoration committee.
