The Sri Lanka Temperance Association condemned a proposal by the Excise Department to introduce a low cost alcohol claiming that it would help minmise the issue of illegal alcohol.

The Association in a statement, said that it was similar to the situation where some medical experts tried to bring Agricultural related proposals on restricting import of fertiliser.

The Association noted that alcohol prices has been increasing in the past two years and in the event the government wants to provide alcohol at low prices, they should be reducing the taxes.

The Temperance Association said that there were several myths related to the proposal of submitting low cost alcohol.

Among the myths was that the consumption of illegal liquor would reduce, if a low cost liquor is introduced, the Association pointed out adding that in contrast the liquor consumption would increase.

The Association also dispelled claims that
by increasing liquor prices, the tax collection would increase and that the use of arrack was harmless and that illegal liquor was harmful.

Another myth was that the government’s popularity would increase by introducing a low cost liquor. The Association said that 81 per cent of the population do not consume liquor and that there are women and children who suffer throughout their life because some one close to them consumes liquor.
