Galle spinners cripple Dambulla’s chase
Galle are set for an early kill as Dambulla were left without answers at 27-6, chasing a target of 251 runs when play ended on the third day of the National Super League 4-day Cricket Tournament game at Galle International Stadium yesterday. Galle left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage ran riots to send Dambulla reeling down from 2-18 to 6-23 by claiming two wickets each in the two consecutive overs he bowled, with three of them walking back without scoring.
Electing to bat, Galle made 267 with opener hitting 100 off 163 deliveries, while skipper Dhananjaya de Silva hit an elegant 106 off 155 deliveries to help Dambulla post 261 in reply. Galle were bowled out for 244 in their second innings with Ramesh Mendis top scoring with 56, while Akila Dananjaya claimed five scalps, to complete a match-bag of 12 for 163. Kandy ended the third day in a strong position against Colombo at the Sooriyawewa Stadium. Kandy resumed from 26 for no loss and declared their second innings at 244-3, setting a massive target of 599 runs to chase. Nuwanindu Fernando stroked an unbeaten century while Janishka Perera fell short of a deserving ton by seven runs. Colombo were 85-1 with Avishka Fernando remaining unbeaten on 52 when stumps were drawn. The matches will end today.
