Richmond thump Matara Thomians
Richmond College outclassed St. Thomas’ College, Matara, securing a dominant innings and 35-run victory in their low-scoring Under-19 Inter-School cricket encounter, which concluded yesterday at the Uyanwatta Stadium in Matara.
Resuming on their overnight score of 63 for 6, in response to Richmond’s total of 185, St. Thomas’ was bowled out for a mere 80 runs, with Malith de Silva inflicting the damage. Forced to follow on, the Matara Thomians fared no better, crumbling for just 70 runs in their second innings, conceding an outright win.
Meanwhile, an unbeaten century from Dinul Wijesinghe helped St. Anthony’s College salvage a draw against Dharmaraja College at the Lake View ground in Kandy. Wijesinghe’s 105 was the cornerstone of resistance as he built three crucial partnerships—132 runs for the fifth wicket with Thilina Edirisinghe, 58 runs for the sixth wicket with skipper Charuka Ekanayake, and an unbroken 63-run stand for the seventh wicket with Kevan Fernando—ensuring Dharmaraja was denied an outright win. At Asgiriya, Trinity College and St. Benedict’s College played for a draw in another match that concluded yesterday.
