Sri Lankan food hasn’t got enough prominence globally

One of the first things a tourist falls in love when they visit Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan hospitality and the food. Compared to other countries, Sri Lankan food is very unique with its mix of spices. However the country has not promoted its ‘food tourism’ globally.

Chef Gerard Mendis, Chairman of the Chef’s Guild of Lanka shared these sentiments with the Business Times at the media launch of the Culinary Art Food Expo (CAFE) 2025 held at the Marino Beach Hotel in Colombo last Tuesday.

Mr. Mendis said, “Globally food is a main concern when it comes to tourism. We the chefs in Sri Lanka are trying to promote Sri Lankan ‘food tourism’ during the CAFÉ 2025. There is so much goodness in the food varieties we have in our island nation. Sri Lankan food has not received enough prominence globally. Various global food competitions showcase a dish or two from Sri Lanka, but there is far more beyond that. Sri Lankan food is unique compared to other parts of the world. We have not promoted enough our food globally and the Sri Lanka Tourist Board has a huge role to play in this regard.”

He also touched on the migration of chefs during the peak of the economic crisis in Sri Lanka. “During the economic crisis, hotels had to lay-off staff and a lot of chefs left the country in search of foreign jobs. Most of the chefs that left the country, have now returned to Sri Lanka as tourism has picked up significantly, thus the demand for experienced chefs has increased,” noted Mr. Mendis.

The 22nd Edition of the CAFÉ 2025, organised by Chefs Guild of Lanka, will be held at the BMICH in Colombo from June 13 to 15, 2025. The expo stands as the ultimate hub for the food and beverage industry, offering a 360-degree perspective on culinary evolution. From farm-to-table innovations and sustainable food solutions to gourmet artistry, the expo will showcase the finest aspects of the global culinary scene. More than just a trade exhibition, CAFE is a festival of flavours and skills. The event will feature high energy culinary battles, vibrant food festivals, hands-on cooking demonstrations, and masterclasses by celebrated chefs, culminating in the exhilarating ‘Battle of Chefs’ competition.
