Mahapola to be paid with arrears
View(s):The government will begin disbursing Mahapola scholarship payments with arrears from April 15, Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Madura Seneviratne said.
He said some payments are in arrears of 5-10 months and the government hopes to clear that backlog as soon as possible.
Around 60 per cent of all state university students numbering around 64,000 are beneficiaries of the Mahapola scholarship fund.
Cabinet approved the increase of the monthly payment to Rs 7,500 from Rs 5,500 from April this year.
The deputy minister said that while the University Grants Commission maintains a database for Mahapola scholarship recipients, there is a need to set up a new database as well.
The scholarship money is deposited in students’ bank accounts (only People’s Bank and Bank of Ceylon).
