Scholarship in Germany opens for teachers
View(s):The Ministry of Education with the Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka and German Teachers Association of Sri Lanka (SriDaF) have arranged a fully funded scholarship programme for German language teachers.
The “German Language Teaching Excellence Scholarship Award -2025” offers selected teachers the chance to spend three weeks in Germany, further enhancing their linguistic and pedagogical skills.
The winning teacher will receive a three-week, fully-funded scholarship to Germany before October 2025 to attend a German language course organised by a Goethe-Institute in Germany.
The programme is not exclusively for the most outstanding German teachers but aims to provide a fair selection process based on multiple criteria. Selection will take place in three rounds such as submission of documents, school visit and interview.
During the first round applicants must submit a letter of motivation (max two pages written in German), proof of current German language proficiency (Goethe-Zertifikat or equivalent), submit a detailed lesson plan of a lesson showcasing their teaching methodology, a certified timetable approved by the school principal/any other representative of the Ministry of Education and a 15-20 minute recorded lesson (shared through a YouTube link or Google Drive link).
The applicant should also submit performance data of the last two years (O/Level and A/Level student results, if applicable), evidence of extracurricular engagement in promoting German, such as German club activities or school/regional initiatives as well as any additional contributions made towards promoting German language education in the school system.
A representative from the Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Education will visit shortlisted candidates’ schools to assess their teaching environment and impact.
Finalists will undergo a brief interview focusing on their knowledge of the German language and culture.
Applicants are required to have previously visited Germany through a Goethe-Institute or Ministry of Education-funded programme, expected to actively promote German language learning within their schools by organising after-school classes, integrating German with other subjects and encouraging student participation in cultural events.
Participation in professional development programmes conducted by the Ministry of Education or Goethe-Institut will be taken into account. Consideration will be given to teachers who successfully encourage students to take A1, A2, or B1 German exams for respective school students.
Teachers who are interested in the programme are required to submit their applications along with the required documents before April 25, at 11.00 PM.
