Deputy Youth Affairs Minister Eranga Gunasekara has been named as a suspect by the Criminal Investigation Department over the incident where former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence on 5th Lane, Kollupitiya was burned down by a mob during the Aragalaya period.

Mr. Gunasekara is also named as one of the suspects who obstructed firefighters who arrived to douse the blaze at Mr. Wickremesinghe’s private residence on July 9, 2022.  The deputy minister is among a large number of suspects who have been named in the case before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court. Mr. Gunasekara, however, did not appear in court despite a summons issued on him. His lawyers informed court that he was unable to attend court as he was ill. Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura ordered him to be produced in court on the next court date with a medical certificate.

Arrest warrants were issued for the suspects who failed to appear in court.
