The Mahara District Court has allowed normal activities of the Dewana Parapura party to resume after party leader Uvindu Wijeweera agreed not to amend his party’s constitution or structure.

Mahara District Judge Channa Saliya Abeyratne extended the interim injunction issued preventing the convening of a special general meeting of the Dewana Parapura till April 4.

The injunction was issued after the court considered a petition filed by the party’s media secretary Chenaka Abeysinghe, alleging that Uvindu Wijeweera had been acting in a manner unsuited to a party leader and creating a crisis within the party through his arbitrary decisions. It was further alleged that Mr Wijeweera was attempting to convene a special general meeting in violation of the party’s constitution to appoint his friends to party positions.

Appearing for Mr Wijeweera and other national committee members of the party, Sanjeewa Dasanayake, instructed by Dhammika Jimmige, told court that the complainant had obtained the interim injunction by concealing facts from the court. He urged court to lift the interim injunction, stating that party activities had ground to a halt owing to the injunction and this has made it difficult for the party to prepare for upcoming elections.

Kelum Kumarasinghe, who appeared for the petitioner Chenaka Abeysinghe, said there was no bar on continuing party activities and that they had no objection towards conducting party activities as long as no general meeting was convened to introduce amendments to the party constitution and change the party’s structure.

After considering the facts, the District Judge ordered both parties to file written submissions regarding the injunction.
