A 23-year-old man is being held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) after being arrested in Kompanna Veediya earlier this week on suspicion of engaging in activities that threaten Israeli citizens in Sri Lanka and causing communal disharmony.
The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has been informed by the TID earlier this week as to the man’s arrest under the PTA.
The HRCSL said it was monitoring the situation and the well-being of the detainee.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya Colombo District Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahman, who led a protest against the arrest yesterday, claimed that the man was arrested for pasting anti-Israel stickers in public places.
The suspect has been detained under section 7.1 of the PTA, which allows prolonged detention for more than 72 hours.
The police spokesman was not available for comment, while the Defence Media spokesman said he would call back with the information, but no response was received.
