No Lankans harmed in Myanmar-Thailand earthquake disaster
View(s):No Sri Lankan nationals were reported to be affected due to the 7.7 magnitude the earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, according to Sri Lankan diplomatic missions in Yangon and Bangkok.
Sri Lankan Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand Wijayanthi Edirisinghe told the Sunday Times yesterday (29) that Bangkok is back to normal with normalcy being restored and transportation services.
“A few students reached out to us with concerns after minor cracks appeared on the buildings they are staying. We have made sure they are safe,” said Ambassador Edirisinghe.
In Myanmar also, no Sri Lankan nationals are reported to be affected as both Lankan diplomatic missions are coordinating closely following the worst disaster that came ahead of Thai New Year and the Sixth BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Summit which is to be held in Bangkok on April 3-4.
Sri Lankan nationals in Thailand and Myanmar are requested to remain vigilant and be in touch with respective Sri Lanka Embassies as well.
By Saturday (29), at least 10 people in Thailand had been killed as a result of the quake while in neighbouring Myanmar, the death toll is reported to be more than 1,000 with aid groups still struggling to reach those who need help, according to newswire agencies.
