The return of Ali Kazim
View(s):The Founders of the Udayshanth & Angelika Fernando Foundation launched their new Gallery located on the 3rd floor of the Paradise Road building on Galle Road, Colombo 3 this month with a Survey Show of the arresting works of Pakistani artist Ali Kazim. It was the first exhibition to be held in the new venue.
On display were works from Kazim’s first exhibition with Paradise Road Galleries in June 2004, now in the hands of local private collectors. Given to self-portraits, and drawing lone male figures, his works invite quiet deep contemplation.
Now based in Lahore, Pakistan, Kazim, a native of Pattoki, first studied at the National College of Arts, Lahore, later going on to London, to the Slade School of Fine Art. His very first exhibition was at the Paradise Road Galleries under Shanth’s auspices back in 2004 and it is perhaps fitting that his works that have since gained much appreciation should return to grace Shanth’s latest venture.
In an Instagram post, the artist expressed his appreciation of Shanth’s support from ‘Day 1’.
Utilising pencil underdrawing, reinforced by Siyah Qalam – the ancient art of black ink sketching, Kazim’s meticulous work is done on wasli paper.
Kazim’s work has been exhibited at such august venues as the Queensland Art Gallery, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, the Ashmolean Museum Oxford, the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Burger Collection Hong Kong, the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, and the Asia Pacific Museum California.
Ali Kazim’s exhibition is on until April 30 from 10a.m-5p.m., Monday-Friday.
