Cargills Bank PLC is currently strengthening its cyber security framework with the assistance of leading international specialists after a near-crippling data breach on March 20, the bank said.

A ransomware gang called Hunters International had allegedly hacked the bank but they have only infiltrated the data not encrypted (yet), unconfirmed reports revealed.

The bank has promptly isolated the impacted components and is reinforcing its security frame work, it revealed adding that it is adhering to official guidelines to safeguard customer data and prevent misuse. Cargills Bank assured that core banking operations are intact and fully functional, paving the way for customers to carry out transactions with confidence.

It has made two previous announcements on March 21 and March 25 disclosing an unauthorised party has claimed to have accessed some of bank’s data and subsequently published the same.

In the bank’s previous statements, it said it had successfully countered a ‘cyber security incident involving access to a ‘peripheral system’ and further strengthened its infrastructure.

The bank’s ongoing investigation reveals that some of the bank’s information is among the data breached.

“Upon detection of the incident, the bank engaged a team of leading international cyber security specialists to support our response. Their mandate includes incident investigation, containment, and strengthening of the bank’s cyber security framework,” it elaborated.

The bank also immediately notified and is continuously updating regulatory and law enforcement authorities on the incident and is fully cooperating with their ongoing investigations, it added. “We remain fully committed to protecting our customers’ data and privacy and are working closely with the relevant authorities to contain the unlawful dissemination of data and safeguard,” the bank said.

Informed sources indicate that approximately 1.9 terabytes of customer and staff data were compromised in what is considered one of Sri Lanka’s most significant data breaches. There were 1,137,008 files in total (1.9TB),

These files reportedly contain highly sensitive customer data, including NIC numbers, passport details, specimen signatures of staff, and more.

The best way in these circumstances is to provide customers of all available details and continuous updates as and when new information emerges, a cyber-security expert disclosed.

Affected customers should take immediate protective measures to monitor their accounts closely, change passwords across all services and monitor credit balance.
