Government to fill all teacher vacancies in the next few years
View(s):The government is in the process of filling teacher vacancies in government schools with around 17,000 recruitments due to be completed by this year, Deputy Education Minister Madura Seneviratne said.
He said there are 40,00 vacancies in government schools at present both at national and provincial levels and the government hopes to fill these vacancies in the next few years.
The new appointments will be given based on competitive exams with those who have passed out from the teacher training colleges being given first preference, while unemployed graduates too will be recruited as teachers after the current backlog of trainee teacher’s placements are cleared.
The objective of the government is to ensure the full quota of teachers for each subject in all schools is filled, he said. “If there are surplus teachers for a subject for a particular school, they will be transferred to ones that have vacancies for such a subject teacher,” he said.
Teachers who are appointed would be placed in schools closer to their homes which would be a motivating factor as well as stop the excess number of teachers being assigned to schools, he said.
