The 12th session of the Vice Chancellor’s Lecture Series was conducted recently at the University of Peradeniya with a focus on the human-monkey conflict.

The speaker for the event was Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, lecturer (prob) Lakshani Weerasekara, who has research expertise in primatology and wildlife conservation.

Mrs Weerasekara delivered an insightful and timely speech on “Human Monkey Conflict in Sri Lanka and Strategies to Overcome the Challenge” highlighting the human-monkey conflict in Sri Lanka due to population overlap, habitat loss, habitat degradation and improper garbage disposal, and explaining the current practices in other countries to mitigate human-monkey conflict and recommended long-term solutions in detail.

The audience included the vice chancellor, deputy vice chancellor, the deans of the faculties, directors of postgraduate institutes and centers, heads of the departments, as well as many academic and non-academic staff.

The Vice Chancellor’s Lecture Series aims to provide the university community with an opportunity to engage with and learn from eminent speakers and professionals in their respective fields of expertise. It serves as a platform for intellectual enrichment, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and knowledge within the academic community, the university said.
