The High Court Judges’ Association (HCJA) has written to the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) expressing concerns over what it says are attempts by some members of the Bar in recent days to intentionally tarnish the reputation of the judiciary following a recent incident.

“It has been brought to our notice by the members of the judiciary and also members of the Bar that some lawyers are willfully targeting the judiciary in order to meet their personal ends,” says the letter, signed by HCJA Secretary Pamila Ratnayake and addressed to BASL Secretary Chathura Galhena.

The HCJA adds that it firmly believes that a positive relationship between the Bench and Bar is crucial for the effective functioning of the justice system, and any attempts to undermine that must be taken seriously.

“We appreciate the importance of freedom of speech; however, we urge the Bar Association to encourage its members to express their views in the media and on social media responsibly and with a firm understanding of the facts. Unfortunately, some members of the Bar promote hatred and disrespect towards the Courts, despite being aware that their portrayal of the facts is misleading.”

The letter strongly urges the BASL’s Executive Committee to implement necessary corrective measures, “as escalating this situation could place the entire profession in an unfortunate and unnecessary predicament.”
