Lanka’s highest honour conferred on Modi
View(s):President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday conferred on Indian Prime Minister the title of ‘Sri Lanka Mithra Vibhushana’, an honour reserved for leaders of states with which Sri Lanka has special relations. It is conferred in appreciation of their friendship towards and solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka. President Dissanayake said the award was conferred on Prime Minister Modi for his enduring contribution to strengthening India-Sri Lanka friendship.
Prime Minister Modi said it was a matter of great pride to be awarded the ‘Sri Lanka Mithra Vibhushana’ by President Dissanayake and said he was accepting the award on behalf of 1.4 billion people of India.
He dedicated the honour to the special friendship between India and Sri Lanka and the age-old links between the people of the two countries. Mr. Modi is the second recipient of the award, the first being the former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who received it in 2008.
