Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called Sri Lanka to reconsider some of the recent tough steps taken by the government to prevent Tamil Nadu bottom trawlers from entering the country’s Northern territorial waters and engage in bottom trawling on the basis of adopting a “humanitarian and constructive approach,”

“Prime Minister emphasised that at the end of the day, it is a daily issue for fishermen and certain actions that have been taken in recent times could be reconsidered,” Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said yesterday in a press briefing at Taj Samudra, Colombo.

According to the Indian Foreign Secretary, the fishermen issue was discussed in considerable detail between the two sides. “It is something that has remained a constant feature of discussions at all levels including high levels between the two sides.”

Ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the island, eleven Indian fishermen who were detained for engaging in illegal bottom trawling in Sri Lankan territorial waters were released on Friday on humanitarian basis following a recommendation from the Attorney General department.

Steps were also taken to repatriate the released fishermen to their hometown of Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu.
