91st Battle of Saints ends in drab draw
View(s):The 91st Battle of the Saints cricket match between traditional rivals St. Joseph’s College and St. Peter’s College ended in an tame draw at the SSC ground yesterday. St. Joseph’s, resuming their innings at the overnight score of 150-3 in reply to St. Peter’s 243, struggled to build momentum despite Yenula Dewthusa’s impressive knock of 86.
Dewthusa formed valuable partnerships of 91 runs for the fourth wicket with Senuja Wakunugoda and 64 runs for the fifth wicket with Rishma Amarasinghe, but the team lost wickets at regular intervals. They eventually declared the innings at 240-7, three runs behind their opponent’s total.
In their second innings, St. Peter’s batsmen failed to make a significant impact, besides Nathan David’s half-century, which was the only notable performance. The team was dismissed for 168 runs, setting St. Joseph’s a victory target of 172. With limited time remaining, St. Joseph’s reached 70-2 when play concluded, confirming the draw that had seemed inevitable from earlier in the day.
