Daniel helps Jaffna take slender lead vs Galle
Shevon Daniel’s unbeaten 65 helped Jaffna take a slender lead of 69 runs with eight wickets hand when bad light called off the match early on day three against Galle in their National Super League cricket match at Sooriyawewa yesterday.
Resuming from 260 for 6, Galle added valuable runs through Ramesh Mendis’ resilient 124 before being dismissed for 371. Sithum Dissanayake and Asanka Manoj were the pick of Jaffna’s bowlers, claiming three wickets apiece.
Trailing by 66 runs after the first innings, Jaffna’s top order responded positively in their second stint at the crease. While Ravindu Rasantha contributed a patient 20, it was Daniel who stole the spotlight with his fluent half century, reaching 65 not out at stumps. Thanuka Dabare provided excellent support with a well-crafted 44, helping establish a 69-run advantage with eight second-innings wickets still in hand.
Earlier, Galle’s first innings saw contributions from Oshada Fernando (62) and Dinesh Chandimal (40), but Jaffna’s bowling attack maintained pressure throughout, with Sithum Dissanayake (3/57), Asanka Manoj (3/59), Chamika Karunaratne (2/100), Nimesh Vimukthi (2/65) doing the damage.
