AG to file revision application against releasing Deshabandu on bail
The Attorney General is to file a revision application in the Matara High Court against the order by the Matara Magistrate’s Court to release suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon on bail.
Matara Magistrate Aruna Buddhadasa ordered him to be released on bail on Thursday (10) on two sureties of Rs. 1 million each. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Dileepa Peiris, who appeared for the AG strongly objected to bail being granted to Mr. Tennakoon. ASG Peiris stressed that the suspended IGP had evaded arrest for nearly 20 days and that releasing him at this moment would impede the ongoing investigation against him.
Shanaka Ranasinghe, PC, and Anuja Premaratne, PC, appeared for Mr. Tennakoon.
Mr. Tennakoon had been remanded in custody since March 19 after surrendering to court over the shooting incident that occurred in front of the W 15 hotel in Weligama in December 2023, which resulted in the death of an officer from the Colombo Crime Division.
Meanwhile, the Sunday Times understands that the AG has instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to record a statement from former President Ranil Wickremesinghe over the incident where a sum of Rs. 2.5 million had been released from the President’s Fund to the family of the CCD officer who was killed in the Weligama shooting.
