Peradeniya- a pretty picture this season
View(s):The gardens of the University of Peradeniya are a sea of colours this season, with flowers of various hues blooming around the campus.
The trees have been hand-planted by its first curator and his men on the instructions of Sir Ivor Jennings, the first Vice Chancellor of the University.
This land on which the Campus was built was once a rubber and tea estate and there were no flowering plants then.
The rubber trees were uprooted to construct a cantonment for the Southeastern Command of Lord Mountbatten, making it easy for the establishment of the university when the land was handed over to the university by an act of parliament.
The task was left to the curator of the gardens to plant trees. The curator and his men’s work stands as a monument with all the flowering trees during this season.
