Percussion bands herald Nuwara Eliya spring festival

The annual Nuwara Eliya spring festival started with a bang on April 1, with a performance by 18 percussion bands featuring 600 schoolchildren.

The parade was held along Queen Elizabeth Mawatha, near the Nuwara Eliya central market, with the Central Provincial Chief Secretary, G.H. M. Ajith Premasinghe as Chief Guest.

The Nuwara Eliya Municipal Commissioner, K.M.S. W. officially proclaimed the beginning of the spring festival (wasantha samaya) which was immediately followed by the spirited parade of schoolchildren. The event drew a large crowd, including many foreign tourists.

Several public officials attended the opening ceremony, including Secretary to the Governor Manjula Madahapola, Secretary, chief ministry of the Central Provincial Council, Madupani Piyasena, Nuwara Eliya District Secretary Thushari Tennakoon, and local government commissioner Chamili Athapattu.

Officers representing the tri-forces, the police, principals of schools in the Nuwara Eliya area, representatives of Nuwara Eliya tourist hotels, bank officials and parents of schoolchildren also attended the parade.
