Rahal Cosmos: A Cosmic Opportunity for Young Stargazers
View(s):Astronomy has always been a profound interest in many young students in Sri Lanka, but only a few of them move forward in the field due to the lack of encouragement from their family backgrounds due to the unconventional nature of the choice. A number of school-based Astronomical Societies in Sri Lanka have been started recently in order to give more opportunities to those who have skills to choose the field, along with many institutes and programs launched by scholars working in Sri Lanka.
The leading Boys’ school in the beautiful coastal area of down south, Rahula College, has always been a pioneer in School-based Astronomy. Rahula College Astronomical Society is one of the foremost Astronomical Societies dedicated to form professionals with opportunities related to the subject. Ever since it was re-established in 2017, the society has organised numerous night camps with experienced lecturers around Sri Lanka, practical workshops on rocketry, solar observations camps and countless competitions and hands-on lectures to introduce the importance of subject not only to students in Rahula College, but to all students studying in different regions of the country.
Every year, the society organises an Annual Astronomy Quiz Competition, which is, in fact, the largest Virtual Solo Astronomy Quiz Competition held with more than 300 contestants. Taking a different turn this time, Rahal Cosmos 2024 (taking place in April 2025), has been improved to an international standard; which is why this is taking place as a South Asian competition in this April.
The Competition is open to any student from South Asia, studying above grade 6 in Secondary school (or equivalent in other countries). The event will take place virtually through a Cosmoverse designed for the first time in Sri Lanka, allowing participants to communicate and share ideas with like-minded individuals, on 25th April 2025, 6.00 pm onwards. Registrations have been open and will be through 18th of April.

The competition has been structured to match the international level with help from experienced instructors within the field. The syllabus for the competition (Quiz competition and practical rounds) is designed to cover main branches in Astronomy; Astrophysics, physical cosmology, observational astronomy, rocketry and astrobiology. Students below Grade 10 are registered under the Junior Category, and the rest are registered under the Senior Category.
In addition to the medals and a valuable certificate, the winner of the competition will receive the Rahal Cosmos Golden Coin, along with a monetary prize of Rs. 10 000. The Competition is totally free to all participants, and no payments have to be made. This is an excellent opportunity to anyone interested in Astronomy; from Beginners to those who have a certain level of experience. Instead of the regular Astronomy competitions, Rahal Cosmos is dedicated to provide a unique experience where students get to interact in the field practically, with real-world applications.
